Improving transparency and inclusiveness of MAG selections

Apr 4, 2016

Dear Chengetai and IGF Secretariat,

Congratulations on the appointment of Lynn St. Amour as new IGF Secretariat Chair, and the announcement of the MAG 2016. We look forward to fruitful work with Ms. St. Amour, the Secretariat, and the entire IGF Team.

We note the decision of the IGF to move towards a transparent, inclusive process, with organised members of multistakeholder groups being responsible for selecting appropriate representatives of each stakeholder group for representation. (point 20b of the report of the Working Group on Improvements to the IGF) We look forward to further developments in this regard as we move towards considering process improvements for the 2017 MAG renewal.

When we submitted our list of CS names, we gave our reasoning for our choices. To increase our understanding of how final selections are being made currently, can we respectfully request that the IGF Secretariat/UNDESA explain the process and reasoning for the selection of CS 2016 MAG members, and also why particular names submitted by us (and other stakeholder representative groups) were not able to be included (while other civil society names were included?)

We look forward to your response as soon as possible, as this will help us to work with you and others to develop the best possible representative, transparent and inclusive process.

Thank you, and best wishes for a successful year!

Ian Peter
